A Career Spanning Four Decades

Avijit Sarkar's music transcends many boundaries and encompasses a huge variety of styles  from the very traditional Indian classical forms to contemporary styles. He was initiated into music by his parents and then went on to learn classical music under experts. However, Avijit's curiosity for music led him to study Western music and various styles of percussion. He is now known for his skills as a multi-instrumentalist and he is adept at playing electronic synthesizers, harmonium, accordion and the melodica. Avijit has been, since his childhood days, a great fan of percussion. He initially learnt the Indian tabla and then migrated to world percussion. He plays a variety of percussion instruments like the dholak, the dafli, a variety of hand-percussion and Latin-American instruments like the Congas, bongo and timbale. He is also a very skilled drummer, having spent a few years with rock bands in India as a drummer.

In India, Avijit has worked with productions by All India Radio and Doordarshan TV. In Australia, he has been endorsed as a composer and music writer by APRA (The Australian Performing Rights Assoc). Over the last four decades, he done thousands of concerts as a singer and musician. He has also established his own institution in Sydney - Natraj Academy - where he has trained many musical talents. Some of the voices trained by him are now commercial singers in Sydney. He has written original music scores for many albums, for theatre and for film.

With the advent of the digital age, Avijit has adopted the state-of-art digital music technologies and uses them for most of his new compositions and recordings. He is currently studying and implementing his own sound designs through programming of virtual instruments and other digital technologies.
