About Avijit

Avijit Sarkar is a musician, composer, illustrator, cartoonist, writer, poet, puppeteer, mathematician, philanthropist and a polymath from Sydney, Australia. He was awarded the Australia Day Award 2020 (by the City of Parramatta, Australia) for his contributions to Arts and Culture.

 

Although known across Australia for his contribution to the arts, Avijit holds a masters degree in Pure Mathematics with a post-graduate thesis on the 'Theory of Numbers'. In 1979, he was awarded two prestigious gold medals from Gujarat University (India), for academic excellence in mathematics. Later, he migrated to the field of computer software and later held the role of Associate Professor at the post-graduate courses in the prestigious Bhavans College.

He has been in the music and arts industry for over four decades and has been endorsed by the Australian Performing Rights Association (APRA) as a music composer. He has done over 1900 concerts in India and Australia. He has had training in Indian classical music and has commendable knowledge of Western music. His skills as a multi-instrumentalist (harmonium, synthesizers, piano-accordion, melodica, Indian percussion and Latin-American percussion)  is widely known.

From an early age, he was trained in puppetry by the internationally acclaimed Meher Contractor, with whom he performed at international puppetry and theater festivals in Iran and France.

He has written three books and his other literary works have been published in many international anthologies.  In 2020, he was awarded the Golden Vase award by TSL (The Significant League – an international group of authors, poets, academics, publishers and critics) for excellence in satire and humour.

 

His designs, illustrations and cartoons have appeared in numerous magazines and books across the world. His has used a wide range of media for his artwork including oil, acrylic, watercolour and ink. He is a prolific social cartoonist and his series of cartoons on the COVID-19 virus (2020) has been published as a book titled "The Coronavirus Files"

Two decades ago, Avijit embraced atheism and chooses to call himself a 'scientific skeptic'. Through his works, he has established himself as a strong propagator of rational thought, anti-racism and women's rights. He has written many philosophical essays on religion, ambition, intelligence, death, grief and creativity.

Avijit is the director of Natraj Academy in Sydney that he established 12 years ago to train and encourage new music talents in our communities.

                                                 

Today, all proceeds from his creative pursuits are donated to medical research and charity in Australia. In a career spanning over four decades, Avijit has left his footprint in every form of creativity in Australia.

Avijit lives in the beautiful city of Sydney with his wife Dr Palu Malaowlla. He has one daughter Annie Sarkar and three granddaughters Olivia, Chloe and Grace.
